New Project Aims to Improve Water Quality at Marina del Rey Beach

Supervisor Don Knabe announced recently that the Board of Supervisors approved the Marina Beach Water Quality Improvement Project for Mother’s Beach in Marina del Rey.

Restricted tidal action in this part of the Marina often results in stagnant and uncirculated water. Because of this, Mother’s Beach sometimes suffers from high bacteria levels. Two water circulators, which are huge fiberglass propellers, will be installed below the surface of the water. The large blades of the circulators are enclosed in cages, so there is no danger to the public or any aquatic species. The increased mixing of the water by these circulators will expose contaminants to sunlight, resulting in a reduction of harmful bacteria in the water.

The project which is scheduled to begin on August 1, 2005, is being funded by the Department of Beaches and Harbors and a grant from the State Water Resources Control Board. The estimated time of project completion is January 2006.

The water quality at our beaches throughout the County is very important to me, said Supervisor Knabe. This project will improve the water quality at Mother’s Beach and give both residents and visitors access to a safe and quality beach in Marina del Rey.

Photos of the circulators and a map of the projects location are available. Any media outlet interested in obtaining copies can call (213) 974-1095.
