The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors approved a motion today to allocate $3,900,000 to twenty-four Fourth District cities for recreation and open space projects.

Projects will include improvements such as planting community gardens, upgrading play equipment at parks, refurbishing and expanding trails, and constructing picnic shelters. Each city will be required to submit an application stating what projects it wishes to complete, which must be approved by the Los Angeles County Regional Park and Open Space District staff prior to the disbursement of funds.

This process is a continuation of the Safe Neighborhood Parks Proposition of 1992 and 1996. The Propositions identified a process to assess real property in Los Angeles County and allocate funds according to formulas approved by the voters in countywide elections.

“I know that funds are limited in these tough economic times,” said Supervisor Knabe. “I hope these projects will help enhance the parks and open space of our cities so that residents have recreational opportunities to enjoy in their communities.”

The cities receiving the funds include Artesia, Avalon, Bellflower, Cerritos, Diamond Bar, Downey, El Segundo, Hawaiian Gardens, Hermosa Beach, La Habra Heights, La Mirada, Lakewood, Lomita, Long Beach, Manhattan Beach, Norwalk, Palos Verdes Estates, Paramount, Rancho Palos Verdes, Redondo Beach, Rolling Hills Estates, Signal Hill, Torrance, and Whittier.
