Supervisors Approve Marina Del Rey Odor Control Project

Beaches and Harbors announced today the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors approved plans, specifications and advertisement for a construction bid contract to construct a sanitary sewer air scrubber in Marina del Rey.

"Residents and visitors across Marina del Rey are going to notice a significant improvement," said Supervisor Knabe. "But this project is going to particularly benefit the condo owners living in the adjacent Marina City Club towers, who have had to deal with sewer-like smells coming from the area for a long time."

The Odor Control project will help deal with the odor issue along Admiralty Way in front of the Marina City Club, which is part of the Los Angeles County Department of Public Works ongoing program for the operation, maintenance and repair of sewer systems.

The project will be completed in approximately 20 working days and has an estimated cost between $145,000 and $170,000, which is included in the Fiscal Year 2010-11 Marina del Rey Sewer Maintenance District Fund Budget.

Work on the Odor Control project is anticipated to start in October 2010 and is scheduled to be completed November 2010.

Transforming Lifeguard Towers on County Beaches
This summer more than 100 of the Los Angeles County beach lifeguard towers will be visually transformed as part of a massive public art and civic project developed by Portraits of Hope, in cooperation with the Los Angeles County Lifeguard Association. The project and exhibition has been approved by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, the Los Angeles County Fire Chief and the Los Angeles Department of Beaches and Harbors.

Providing Opera for Children at the Lloyd Taber-Marina del Rey Library
The highly-acclaimed Opera Tales program returned to Fourth District County Libraries. Opera Tales is a LA Opera program that introduces children and families to the world of opera at local libraries. Supervisor Knabe established the partnership between the LA Opera and the County of Los Angeles Public Library, and provided funding to bring Opera Tales to libraries in the Fourth District.

2009

Providing Summer Beach Shuttle Service
Thanks to a continued partnership between Playa Vista and Supervisor Don Knabe, Chairman of the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, residents and visitors to the Marina can once again enjoy a relaxing ride on the free Summer Beach Shuttle service buses without having to deal with the burden of gasoline costs, parking fees, and traffic headaches.

Funding Fourth District Paratransit Shuttle Services

The Board of Supervisors approved $664,000 in funding for the continuation of paratransit shuttle service for eligible patrons in the unincorporated areas of the Fourth District for Fiscal Year 2009-2010. The program will include the following paratransit shuttle services: La Rambla, Marina del Rey, Rancho Los Amigos, Teen Mother, and the Whittier Islands.

Opposing the Elimination of the California Department of Boating and Waterways
The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors unanimously agreed to oppose Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger’s plan to eliminate the California Department of Boating and Waterways. The motion, authored by Supervisor Don Knabe also directs the County’s Chief Executive Office, in conjunction with the Sheriff’s and Fire Departments and the Department of Beaches and Harbors, to prepare a letter of opposition to be sent to the Governor.

Dredging in Marina del Rey

The United States Army Corps of Engineers began dredging the south entrance channel to Marina del Rey. The $3 million dredging project will remove 50,000 cubic meters of contaminated sediment using a hydraulic dredge to remove a tip shoal area at the south entrance of the Marina harbor. The project will return the south entrance to its design depth of 20 feet and will place the clean sand removed from the area offshore from Dockweiler Beach to aid in beach replenishment.

2008

Opposing City of Los Angeles Sewer Project in Marina del Rey
The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors voiced unanimous opposition to a City of Los Angeles sewer expansion project that would have significant negative impacts to the residents and businesses in Marina del Rey. The letter of opposition, authored by Supervisor Don Knabe, is over the Venice Dual Force Main Sewer Line Project, a planned expansion of the City of Los Angeles sewage system capacity by building a redundant sewer line in the Venice area that would transport sewage south to the Hyperion Treatment Plant. Although there are three possible routes for the sewer line, the City’s preferred route is by digging up streets in unincorporated Marina del Rey, going south down Marquesas Way and Via Marina.

Approving Water-Saving Rebate Program
The Board of Supervisors approved a rebate program recently for the purchase of water-saving devices that will reduce water-waste both indoors and outside. Available to all Los Angeles County Waterworks Districts customers, the new program provides an incentive for customers to reduce water use. The rebate program offers money back for rotating sprinkler nozzles, “smart” weather-based sprinkler controllers, high-efficiency clothes washers, synthetic turf, ultra-low-flush or dual flush toilets, and waterless urinals purchased and installed on or after January 1, 2008.

Funding Fourth District Paratransit Shuttle Services
The Board of Supervisors approved $608,000 in funding for the continuation of paratransit shuttle service for eligible patrons in the unincorporated areas of the Fourth District for Fiscal Year 2008-2009. The program will include the following paratransit shuttle services: La Rambla, Marina del Rey, Rancho Los Amigos, Teen Mother, and the Whittier Islands.

Upgrading the South Bay Bike Trail
A major upgrade and overhaul of the South Bay Bike Trail was completed. The portion of the renovated bike path is located between 62nd Avenue and Culver Boulevard in the Playa del Rey community of the City of Los Angeles. The project involved the reconstruction of the existing bike trail, including the construction of deep base to stabilize the path and new concrete pavement, and the installation of new striping and pavement markings.

2007

Redirecting Urban Runoff and Pollutants Away from Ocean
The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors accepted the construction of a new low-flow diversion that was recently completed at Washington Boulevard in the vicinity of Marina del Rey. Low-flow diversions are designed to keep non-storm water flows from reaching the ocean by instead diverting the water into a sewage treatment plant.

Marina del Rey Seawall Upgrades
A $5.3 million upgrade project was started on the seawalls surrounding Marina del Rey. The improvements to 17,600 linear feet of the seawall will help protect against deterioration caused by tidal changes. The Marina contains more than 7.2 miles of underwater seawalls designed to protect the community.

Expanding Summer Beach Shuttle Service
The Beach Shuttle, which is free of charge and open to the public, is funded by a combination of funds from Supervisor Knabe and Playa Vista. The Beach Shuttle which serves Playa Vista, Marina del Rey and the Venice Beach Pier is now offering expanded service to Fisherman’s Village in Marina del Rey.

Renewing Reward for Hit-and-Run Death of Marina del Rey Man
The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors renewed a $10,000 reward, at the request of Supervisor Knabe, for information related to the hit-and-run death of Marina del Rey resident, Patrick Conarpe.

Testing Early Warning Loudspeakers in Marina del Rey
The Los Angeles County Department of Beaches and Harbors tested several different early warning loudspeaker systems at Burton Chace Park in Marina del Rey. Several companies competed for the County’s use of their device. The equipment is being considered as part of a mass notification warning system for residents and visitors in Marina del Rey in the event of impending danger from either a natural or human-made disaster.

Funding Fourth District Paratransit Shuttle Services
The Board of Supervisors approved $660,000 in funding for the continuation of paratransit shuttle service for eligible patrons in the unincorporated areas of the Fourth District for Fiscal Year 2007-2008. The program will include the following paratransit shuttle services: La Rambla, Marina del Rey, Rancho Los Amigos, Teen Mother, and the Whittier Islands.
