Playa del Rey Accomplishments

2010

Transforming Lifeguard Towers on County Beaches
This summer more than 100 of the Los Angeles County beach lifeguard towers will be visually transformed as part of a massive public art and civic project developed by Portraits of Hope, in cooperation with the Los Angeles County Lifeguard Association. The project and exhibition has been approved by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, the Los Angeles County Fire Chief and the Los Angeles Department of Beaches and Harbors.

2009

Dedicating Dockweiler Youth Center
Nearly 20 years after it was first envisioned, a new youth and community center was dedicated this week at Dockweiler State Beach by Supervisor Knabe and County leaders. The $7 million project is jointly funded by County of Los Angeles Prop A and a grant from the State of California through Proposition 12 bond funds. The new building provides a youth activity center at Dockweiler State Beach and will serve as the southern headquarters for the Los Angeles County W.A.T.E.R. (Water Awareness, Training, Education and Recreation) youth education program offering aquatic sports camps.

Providing Summer Beach Shuttle Service
Thanks to a continued partnership between Playa Vista and Supervisor Don Knabe, Chairman of the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, residents and visitors to the Marina can once again enjoy a relaxing ride on the free Summer Beach Shuttle service buses without having to deal with the burden of gasoline costs, parking fees, and traffic headaches.

Opposing the Elimination of the California Department of Boating and Waterways
The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors unanimously agreed to oppose Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger’s plan to eliminate the California Department of Boating and Waterways. The motion, authored by Supervisor Don Knabe also directs the County’s Chief Executive Office, in conjunction with the Sheriff’s and Fire Departments and the Department of Beaches and Harbors, to prepare a letter of opposition to be sent to the Governor.

Dredging in Marina del Rey

The United States Army Corps of Engineers began dredging the south entrance channel to Marina del Rey. The $3 million dredging project will remove 50,000 cubic meters of contaminated sediment using a hydraulic dredge to remove a tip shoal area at the south entrance of the Marina harbor. The project will return the south entrance to its design depth of 20 feet and will place the clean sand removed from the area offshore from Dockweiler Beach to aid in beach replenishment.

2008

Funding the Improvement of the South Bay Bike Trail

Over four miles of the Marvin Braude South Bay Bike Trail will soon be refurbished or completely rebuilt after Supervisor Don Knabe agreed to fund the project with $5 million in Fourth District Capital Improvement funds. The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved the project. The portions of the bike path to be renovated are located between Culver Boulevard in Playa del Rey and Calle Miramar in Torrance. The project involves removing damaged Portland Cement Concrete (Cement) and Asphalt Concrete (Asphalt) and reconstructing those portions of the bike path with similar materials. Also, slurry and crack sealing will be used when complete restructuring is not necessary. Over 21,000 feet, over just over 4 miles of the bike path will be repaired or reconstructed.

Upgrading Bike Path in Playa del Rey
The County has completed an upgrade and overhaul of the South Bay Bike Trail. The renovated bike path is located between 62nd Avenue and Culver Boulevard in the Playa del Rey community of the City of Los Angeles. The $431,243 project involved the reconstruction of the existing bike trail, including the construction of deep base to stabilize the path and new concrete pavement, and the installation of new striping and pavement markings.

Constructing Dockweiler Youth Center
The County has begun construction of the Dockweiler State Beach Youth Center, located at the end of Imperial Highway and Vista del Mar. The $6.2 million project is jointly funded by County of Los Angeles Prop A and State of California Prop. 12 bond funds. This project will provide a youth activity center at Dockweiler State Beach and will serve as the southern headquarters for the Los Angeles County W.A.T.E.R. youth education program offering aquatic sports camps

2007

Refurbishing Dockweiler State Beach
Supervisor Knabe participated in a dedication ceremony for $14 million in new facilities at Dockweiler Beach. Improvements included replacement of four restroom buildings, an entry kiosk, refurbishment of maintenance and lifeguard facilities, a concession building, new playground equipment, and upgrades to the recreational vehicle park with conversion of all spaces to full hook-ups, and parking lots.

Expressing Disappointment in Conclusion of LAX Runway Studies
Supervisor Knabe announced his disappointment in the conclusions reached by studies commissioned by Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA) that called for moving the northernmost runway at LAX at least 340 feet north into the communities of Westchester and Playa del Rey. Each report came to the same conclusion with little, if any, discussion of available alternatives.
