Los Verdes Golf Course To Begin Capital Improvement Project

Los Angeles County Supervisor Don Knabe, the County of Los Angeles Department of Parks and Recreation and American Golf, Los Verdes Golf Course Operator, are pleased to announce the commencement of the driving range practice facility renovation project at Los Verdes Golf Course located in Rancho Palos Verdes.

American Landscape Construction, the project contractor, anticipates the project to begin on May 17, 2010 and to be completed within ninety working days. The renovation project which costs $432,000 is funded by the Los Verdes Golf Course Capital Improvement Fund.

“We look forward to the course improvements,” said Supervisor Knabe. “We know golfers and the surrounding community eagerly await this exciting project funded by the capital improvement fund that’s generated from a portion of all green fees paid by golfers. This facility will continue to provide the community with an excellent recreational facility for many years to come.”

In 1998 the County of Los Angeles renovated the Los Verdes Golf Course driving range. An artificial turf was installed on the approximately four acre facility. Because of the natural elements such as sun, wind and rain, that surface has outlived its useful life.

Releasing Palos Verdes Blue Butterflies
Supervisor Don Knabe joined community leaders for the release of endangered Palos Verdes blue butterflies into restored coastal sage scrub habitat at Deane Dana Friendship Community Regional Park and Nature Center (Friendship Park) in San Pedro. The Palos Verdes blue butterfly is a small, colorful, thumbnail-sized butterfly that was federally listed as endangered by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in 1980. The release of endangered Palos Verdes blue butterflies at Deane Dana Friendship Park is one component of ongoing multiple partnership efforts to recover this endangered native species in southern California.

Transforming Lifeguard Towers on County Beaches
This summer more than 100 of the Los Angeles County beach lifeguard towers will be visually transformed as part of a massive public art and civic project developed by Portraits of Hope, in cooperation with the Los Angeles County Lifeguard Association. The project and exhibition has been approved by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, the Los Angeles County Fire Chief and the Los Angeles Department of Beaches and Harbors.

Preventing Graffiti at South Coast Botanic Gardens

The South Coast Botanic Gardens on the Palos Verdes Peninsula will receive a new chain link fence along Rolling Hills Road and the horse trail. The Security Fencing Graffiti Prevention Project will increase security and make the garden less accessible to graffiti and vandalism. The estimated total project cost is $101,000, and is funded by Proposition A Competitive Excess Grant Funds in the amount of $85,000 with the remaining $16,000 coming from the South Coast Botanic Gardens Special Development Fund.

2007

Synchronizing Traffic in the South Bay
A new Traffic Signal Synchronization Project has been completed in the cities of Manhattan Beach, Hermosa Beach, Redondo Beach, Torrance, Rancho Palos Verdes and Long Beach. The $933,524 project focused on coordinating the timing of signals along three major streets in the South Bay. Over 100 total intersections were synchronized on the following three roads: Artesia Boulevard from Sepulveda Boulevard to Vermont Avenue, Carson Street from Hawthorne Boulevard to Santa Fe Avenue, and Western Avenue from 111th Street to Summerland Avenue.

New Funding for Park Projects
Supervisor Knabe dedicated $1.7 million in Proposition A Park funds to be used for various projects across the Fourth District. In Rancho Palos Verdes, a portion of the money will be used for the rehabilitation of the Point Vicente Neighborhood Trail including installation of metal hand rails, concrete resting pads and strengthening of existing wooden steps. The project will also include improved trail linkages in the Portuguese Bend Nature Preserve.

Keeping Trash Out of the Bay
A project to install 460 trash catch basins in the cities of Hermosa Beach, Inglewood, Manhattan Beach, Rancho Palos Verdes, Santa Monica, and West Hollywood has been approved by the Board of Supervisors. The trash collectors will be placed at the openings of catch basins along the curb, partially blocking the openings to prevent most trash from entering the storm drain system.

Overhauling the Outdated Irrigation System at Los Verdes Golf Course
More than $2.6 million was invested into renovating the irrigation system at the County’s Los Verdes Golf Course on the Palos Verdes Peninsula. The new system will include a weather station and computer system to fully automate irrigation of the golf course. In addition to gauging water needs, the new system will also be capable of injecting fertilizer into the turf.
