Friends of the Fourth
District:
I recently had the pleasure of taking a few thousand students to a
movie. As part of my “Reach Out and Read” literacy program, 4,000
hard working students had the opportunity to attend a private
screening of The Lord of the Rings II: The Two Towers. The free
screening, generously donated by New Line Cinema and AMC Theaters,
was the culmination of a semester-long contest held for students
throughout my district.
Each student was challenged to read J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the
Rings: The Two Towers on their own time and then submit a written
report explaining the significance of the story. All of the books
were provided at no cost to the students by Barnes and Noble and
Random House publishing.
As a surprise the day of the screening, every student who completed
the challenge was then eligible for a grand prize trip for two to
visit New Zealand to see first hand where the movie was filmed. A
Fourth District teacher also received a grand prize trip, both
thanks to Air New Zealand and British Petroleum,
This is the second Lord of the Rings contest my office has held to
help motivate students to read. Last year 1,000 youth participated
in the contest. Next year, when the third and final segment is due
for release, it is my sincere hope that our contest will reach even
more students. Reading is one of the greatest skills a person can
have and I am extremely proud of these students for taking on this
challenge.
