Friends of the Fourth
District:
On September 16, the Board of Supervisors approved a reduction in
the annual Fire Department Special Tax levy on all property owners
in unincorporated areas and incorporated cities served by the fire
district. County residents will save approximately five percent on a
single-family residence with proportional decreases on other
property types within the fire district jurisdiction.
The special tax, approved by over 77% of the voters in 1997, is used
to maintain fire and paramedic services throughout the County.
Higher property tax revenue, and sound fiscal management has made
the regular assessment unnecessary to maintain these services. The
Los Angeles County Fire Department has done a great job maintaining
tight expenditure controls and will continue to provide current
service levels with some modest enhancements while maintaining a
reasonable fund balance.
The decrease in the special tax continues our commitment to keep the
assessment as low as possible, levying the tax at only the amount
necessary to maintain vital services. This decision is a great
example of good government and sound fiscal management,
re-establishing our constitutional responsibility, not to tax
residents beyond necessity, but simply to provide for vital services
throughout the community.
