Long Beach Bridges To Benefit From Seismic Retrofit Project

Los Angeles County will soon begin a bridge seismic retrofit project in Long Beach, Supervisor Don Knabe announced today. The $3.84 million project will improve the structural safety of the southbound Queensway Drive off-ramps over Harbor Scenic Drive near the Port of Long Beach.

The seismic upgrade project involves a number of unique engineering challenges, including driving steel piles with limited overhead access and completing multiple welds needed for splicing the piles. The project will be financed with Federal and State funds.

Construction is scheduled to start in May 2009 and to be completed January 2010. Access to the adjacent properties will remain open during construction. At least one lane will be kept open in each direction on Harbor Scenic Drive during construction.
