Hermosa Beach 100th Anniversary Celebration

On January 14, 1907, Hermosa Beach became the nineteenth incorporated city of Los Angeles County.

The Board of Supervisors named the date, time, and place of election:

Christmas Eve, with the polling place designated as the bowling alley at Tenth Street and Strand.

The vote on incorporation inaugurated a syndrome which was to become a hallmark of the city of Hermosa Beach down through the decades.

The contest was close and bitter, setting the example for future strife.

The precedent was set.

48 votes were cast from an population of 530.

Twenty-four ballots were cast in favor of incorporation and twenty-three opposed.

The official cityhood papers were filed on January 14, 1907, hence the city seal is embossed "Incorporated January 14, 1907".

Interesting fact - the City's first sewer system was a single massive septic tank - which was built under the site where City Hall currently stands.

Insert your own joke about that one.
