Earlier this week, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors called for a study that will examine whether the boundary between Los Angeles and Orange Counties should be slightly adjusted in the area near the Coyote Creek flood control channel.

The areas to be studied include small pockets of the Cities of La Mirada, Hawaiian Gardens, Cerritos, Lakewood, Long Beach and an unincorporated part of Los Angeles County east of Coyote Creek. The proposed changes also would affect the Orange County cities of Buena Park, Fullerton, Cypress, La Palma, Los Alamitos and Seal Beach.

Los Angeles County Supervisor Don Knabe asked for cooperation with Orange County on the issue after he received a request from Orange County Supervisor John Moorlach to look at various issues next to the common boundary.

I want to make it perfectly clear that this question of whether the boundary should be shifted has not even been formally discussed, said Supervisor Knabe. Neither County has taken definitive action or made any suggestion of a boundary change other than to evaluate the issue as requested originally by Supervisor Moorlach.

Now that this study is underway, County service agencies, such as the Fire Department, Sheriff’s Department, school districts, and others, will be asked to provide their own input. Then the several Cities involved will be included in the process and allowed opportunities to comment. Additionally, residents will be part of the process through community meetings.

The bottom line is that nothing has happened on this issue, said Supervisor Knabe. There has been no public discussion and absolutely no decisions on changing the boundary.

"This afternoon, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger announced that until the Legislature passes a budget, he will veto every piece of legislation that is unrelated to the budget. The Governor’s decision to make the budget the highest priority has my support.

The fact is we are more than a month into the new fiscal year and California still does not have a budget. I agree with the Governor that this is a tremendous disservice to the people of our State. There is nothing more important in the Capitol right now than passing a state budget.

Even though the Los Angeles County budget is currently balanced, the State’s uncertain fiscal condition could have a dramatic impact on our County coffers. The longer the Legislature waits to take action, the worse shape we could be in locally when a budget is finally passed.

The County Library offers online tutoring in English, Math, Science and Social Studies to students in grades 4 – 12. Students may log on the Library’s website or to www.librarytutor.org and fill in their County Library Card number to take advantage of this service. The service is available on computers in the libraries, or from home or school computers.

Family Place

Libraries with a Family Place provide a special welcoming atmosphere for young children and families. Parents and preschool children are encouraged to spend time together reading books and playing with developmental toys. Special parent/child programs, workshops and play days introduce caregivers to activities to foster early literacy and learning as well as to specialized community resources.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department will hold a "Women in Law Enforcement Career Day 2008" on June 28, 2008, at the S.T.A.R. On a motion by Supervisor Don Knabe, July 2008 has been declared Junior Golfers Appreciation Month throughout Los Angeles County, and to salute the County’s young golfers, green fees have been reduced to $1.

During the month of July, at all 17 County golf courses, junior golfers (18 and under) can play golf for $1, after 12:00 p.m., when accompanied with a regular adult fee, senior fee, twilight fee or super-twilight fee. In addition, each golf course will hold a free Special Skills Day including activities such as free lessons, clinics, skills challenge contests, and other such events that will improve and promote junior golf participation.

Youth sports programs have traditionally been valuable recreational activities for the young residents of Los Angeles County. Not only do they offer an opportunity for kids of all ages to learn new physical, social, and mental skills, but youth sports also serves as a deterrent to crime, said Supervisor Knabe. This is a great way for us to show our appreciation to all of our junior golfers who use our County golf courses.

The 8th Annual Marina del Rey Summer Concert Series kicks off Thursday, July 10, at 7:00 p.m. waterside at Burton Chace Park in Marina del Rey, Supervisor Don Knabe announced recently.

The concert series is presented free to the public by Arrowhead Mountain Spring Water, and will offer Classical Thursdays, and on alternate weeks, Pop Saturdays, bringing to the Marina internationally famed artists from the worlds of pop and jazz. Popular KUSC personality Rich Capparela appears as series host.

The Classical Thursday series starts July 10, with the brilliant young Polish cellist Marek Szpakiewicz as soloist in the Elgar Cello Concerto in E minor, and music by Ravel, Poulenc, and Hindemith. July 24 introduces a new Night at the Opera event, featuring some of the nation’s most important operatic talents, finalists in the famed Loren L. Zachary National Vocal Competition. August 7 promises to be one of the most exciting symphonic programs the series has ever presented, including works by Gershwin, Ravel, Debussy, Shostakovich, and Respighi’s masterpiece Roman Festivals; and August 24 features the brilliant young pianist John Novacek as soloist in Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue and Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto no. 2 in C minor.

The Los Angeles County Education Coordinating Council (ECC) is sponsoring its first-ever countywide Resource fair for five hundred youth ages 0-24, their caregivers, and those who work with these youth.

The event will provide vital information about county and community resources for after-school and summer enrichment programs, tutoring, mentoring, sports and arts programs, mental health services, early childhood education, workforce readiness, college preparation, libraries and literacy. Connecting youth and their caregivers to these valuable programs and services is an important start in helping to close the achievement gap between the county’s youth and other youth.

More than 130 young adults will take center stage to celebrate their success on Thursday, June 4, 2008, as part of the 19th annual "Celebration 2008: Honoring the Academic Achievements of Foster Youth." The event will begin at 7:00 p.m. at Walt Disney Concert Hall, located at 111 South Grand Avenue in downtown Los Angeles. Actor and comedian Michael Epps will serve as the master of ceremonies.

Hundreds of friends, foster parents and family members will watch as the youth proudly march across the stage to honor this milestone in their lives – an occasion marked by academic accomplishment and triumph over adversity. The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, Los Angeles Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) Director Patricia Ploehn and the Los Angeles County Chief Probation Officer Robert Taylor are among the invited guests.

As part of the "Celebration 2008" graduation ceremony, $577,500 in scholarships will be presented to the youth by a variety of corporations and non-profit organizations. Los Angeles County Acting Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk (RR/CC) Dean Logan announced that additional pollworkers are needed to staff polling places for the June 3, 2008, Statewide Direct Primary Election for certain communities. Pollworkers serve on the frontline of democracy, said Logan. Their commitment to public service is a tribute to them and their communities.

Active recruitment is still taking place for the following communities and areas: Agoura Hills, Beverly Hills, Calabasas, Canyon Country, Castaic, Hermosa Beach, San Fernando Valley, Santa Clarita, Studio City, Malibu, Malibu Heights, Pasadena, Topanga, West Hills, and West Hollywood.

Pollworkers must be available between the hours of 6:00 a.m. and 9:00 p.m. to set up the polls, provide assistance to voters, and conduct poll closing procedures. Pollworkers are compensated $80 for working Election Day plus $25 for attending a 1-1/2 hour training session. In addition, pollworkers who served during the February 5th Presidential Primary and who will work in the upcoming June Statewide Direct Primary Election and November General Election will be paid a $75 bonus.

Training sessions are conducted throughout Los Angeles County in the days prior to the election.
